Western Saddle Rigging: How to Choose the Right Position and the Right Cinch

What is rigging?

Rigging refers to the position of the D-rings on your western saddle. This is where the cinch attaches, and its position directly influences saddle stability, pressure distribution on the horse's back, and freedom of shoulder movement.

Main positions

There are five positions: Full, 7/8, 3/4, 5/8, and Center Fire — each suited to different disciplines and horse conformations.

How to choose the right position?

  • Roping, cutting, cattle work → Full or 7/8
  • Long-distance trail riding → 3/4 (the best compromise)
  • Wide-shouldered horse → 3/4 or 5/8 to free up movement
  • Classic riding or parade → Center Fire

What about the cinch?

The rigging position also determines the type of cinch to use. A Full rigging requires a cinch well-centered under the chest, while a 3/4 or 5/8 rigging allows for a shorter cinch placed further back to maximize horse comfort.
